Knot so that your tiny stems don’t roll and your flowers float just so
- 29 April 2026
Wrap a blade of grass or sedge around a low container twice.
Secure the sedge with a double granny knot.
Every Wednesday morning (Vancouver time), I send out a design note as an early glimpse at the newest Design and a few notes that I picked up creating the Tutorial that might be useful to you. This week, I show you how to knot grass tightly without it snapping.
If you’re new here, you can sign up below this post. And if you’ve been receiving these notes for some time, I hope they feel like a welcome break in your busy week.
Wrap and knot another sedge bundle next to that one..
And a third bundle of sedge on the other end.... Of course this is part of the design and you can add as many bundles or as few as you prefer.
If you ever wonder what skill will serve you well, as a designer, try learning how to tie a few knots. I show you a few of my favourites in my book.
Book readers turn to page 49 (and page one back to page 46 to learn how to prepare foliage for basic cordage) for this granny knot with a tip on creating a permanent hold.

Snip a few tiny Brunnera flowers from the stem.
Pour water into the shallow container and dip your finger into the water...
And with just a drop of water on your finger, and I mean just a drop, I find that dipping my finger, shaking off the water once is just enough water to...
Pick up a single tiny flower...
The water makes it easy to lift the flower without bruising any of the delicate petals.
Simply touch your finger to the water and the flower will float.
If a flower drops in stem up flip it over with a paint brush...
While you clean the water with the paint brush to make sure there are no floating bits of sedge or stems that will spoil the clean look of the floating flowers.
Split open the sedge and use that to position a few lupin leaves to hover over the tiny flowers...
And of course Lupin foliage would not be Lupin foliage without dew drops! I add the crystals with a pin. See the Tutorial below for more detailed instructions.
