This is based on the traditional Palm Sunday crafts technique. The lanterns are usually folded from palm leaves
If you use palm or flax, use the hard middle vein instead of the wire I used in the tutorial below.
Simply split the leaf in three with a pin
For this Tutorial I used four blades of grass and some bind wire
To make up the leaf placed two blades of grass on either side of the wire
Sandwich the blades of grass and the wire
Fold the first blade of grass over its partner
Fold the oposite blade over its partner
Slip the opposite blades through the fold to create a zig zag pattern
Pull the blades all the way through to secure
To start the weaving pattern fold the first leaf over
Fold the next blade over the first
Fold the next blade over this blade
Fold the last blade over the first and slip it through the fold to secure
Pull the blades of grass to tighten the fold
This is the basic folding pattern. Repeat this to make up the lantern
Simply fold over the first blade and fold the next blade over that one.
And slip the last blade through the first fold to secure
Pull the blades tight to secure
Continue to fold the blades over the build up the pattern
Leave just enought grass to be able to fold it in to secure
Fold each tip over and push it into the fold. I use a nail cuticle pusher to neatly hide the tips of grass without damaging it
Cut the wires short, create a loop to hang the lanterns or twist it into tendrils
Secure the bottom part of the lantern...
By twisting the wire and the grass

Curl the wire at irregular intervals to create a natural wire tendril similar to that of a passion fruit plant
