Ever wonder why I send you a tip even before showing you the design How-To’s in our weekly inspiration emails?

Turns out learning is more effective when it happens shortly after even a tiny little bit of novelty:

Our memory improves most when learning takes place within an hour of a new experience.

When a particular week’s design tip (I hope every week… but every now and again is a win for me too) sparks your curiosity your brain lights up and “flags” it as something new,

as worth exploring

and activates a loop between our hippocampus (detects the tip as something new) and dopamine (signals it as worth waking up for) system.

And just like that you are now sharp, alert and ready to explore your new design inspiration discovery.

This signal sparks your creativity and you become more focused. Novelty strengthens your learning to counter the brain numbing effect of simply doing what you have always done- that same old routine- which actually makes learning harder because even a clever brain gets bored and less flexible and stops paying close attention after a while.

So go ahead. Lean in closer and be curious. It is good for you... on a grand scale!
