This Christmas the main aesthetic for 2023 is best described as… visiting Grandpa’s cabin in the woods. The entire look is under-stated but oh so nostalgic. Each week I will show you my take on the trends continuing with:
Simple and sparse trees.
Embrace your tree’s arboreal beauty. Simple twinkling lights on a naked tree… for a subdued Christmas tree without the overwhelm.
For this trend a lot of designers mentioned that they were asked to stage a naked tree with just twinkle lights to let it sparkle for a few days to enjoy just as it is and then to come back and add more closer to Christmas.
But the emphasis is on making it nostalgic.
While we are talking about nostalgia it is worth mentioning that even the Barbie trend that seems to be in complete contrast to the natural trend this year is ultimately about… nostalgia. It is like we found an old toy box and just decided to lean into it. Even the Barbie trend includes a few whimsical and woodsy plucked-from-nature touches like forest creatures, birds perched on branches and oversized blooms … but unlike what I am showing in my design it would probably have been bright pink to fully lean into the Barbie trend… all with that 1980’s twist.
Whichever trend you choose to follow you can't go wrong if you make it meaningful, memory and tradition filled... even a bit like we (used to) find at Christmas time at Grandpa’s cabin.
Handmade woodland creatures, pinecones picked up on a walk, maybe a much loved copper bell for a reindeer.
let's see... I’ve got the oversized blooms. I’ve got the forest creature. I’ve got the twinkling naked trees...
... And then we add a cluster of bells and a long (oversized) and relaxed ribbon. But hang them vertically tied or draped to add a softness to the overall style and be right on trend for Christmas 2023.
Special thank you to the BC Floral Art Society this was also the first of my 4 demonstration designs that we looked at Tuesday morning at the Christmas Celebration.
