Save a snipped grass bundle to tie into a flower frog

Gather a handful of grasses (or in this case sedges... but you know what I mean...) and rinse it under running water to remove any dust that might contaminate your clear water in the small vase.

Cut the grass into a bundle...

Gently tap the grass on a flat working surface to make sure the cut ends are all lined up.

Tie the grass into a sheaf.

Wrap another blade of grass around the other end and tie that side with a knot to secure as well.

Book readers turn to page 154 for another version of this design, this time we add the support to the middle of the grass and let the ends dangle... same idea completely different result. For more information about my book: The Effortless Floral Craftsman

I also have another design example, linked below, to get you started.

Cut away any untidy bits of grass to create a neat sheaf.

Place the sheaf in a small bud vase and fan it open in the middle.

Every Wednesday morning (Vancouver time), I send out a design note as an early glimpse at the newest Design and a few notes that I picked up creating the Tutorial that might be useful to you. This week, I show you how to fan open the sheaf so that it spirals in the top and bottom.

If you’re new here, you can sign up below this post. And if you’ve been receiving these notes for some time, I hope they feel like a welcome break in your busy week.

Remove the foliage from a Passiflora vine...

Thread the vine from the front to the back so that it "grows" through the grass sheaf.

Arrange the tendrils so that they interact with the sheaf to combine your design elements into a unit... and...

... keep the vine from flopping over so that it grows up beyond the grass sheath.

Arrange the begonia flowers so that they are displayed against the fan of the grass.

I finish my design with a few dew drop crystals to add sparkle to the grass and lift out the sparkle in the begonia petals.

See the Tutorial below for detailed instructions.

Every week I add a new design with related tutorials. Be sure to subscribe to receive an email notification with design inspiration.
