Christine de Beer - effortless floral craftsman
A grass frog that falls into a heart
- 11 February 2026
I am designing in a small wineglass but you can also use a budvase or any small display container. Fill the wineglass with water.
Place two blades of grass into the display container in a "v" shape.
If you are new to weaving secure the grass to the container with a small drop of floral glue.
Design note: I use a bamboo skewer as a glue applicator. It makes it easier to apply the tiniest drop of glue in exactly the right place.
Add in another blade of grass this one pointing to the front of your design.
Curve the grass to the front and secure them with floral glue.
Gently curl the grasses to make sure they will dangle above your display surface. You can always adjust it later but it makes it easier to add grasses if you have a guide to work towards.
Book readers turn to page 288 for an advanced way of curling grasses. It works better and can give you a tighter curl but you have to be able to "feel" how much tension the grass needs. For more information about my book: The Effortless Floral Craftsman
But to get you started, first master the curling grass technique in the Tutorial below. It will teach you how the grass behaves when stretched into ringlet curls.
Add in more grass and allow it to tumble forward within this basic heart outline.
Interweave the grasses one by one to create a delicate but robust heart shape.
Weave the grasses over the shape so that the heart tilts up slightly to keep it from looking droopy.
Weave in a neatly pointed heart tip.
Remove the foliage from three passionfruit vines...
And drape the vines over the grass heart...
Place the Arctic bell daffodils into the design.
Every Wednesday morning (Vancouver time), I send out a design note as an early glimpse at the newest Design and a few notes that I picked up creating the Tutorial that might be useful to you. This week, I show you how to place these tiny daffodils so that the tiny bells are where you want them.
If you’re new here, you can sign up below this post. And if you’ve been receiving these notes for some time, I hope they feel like a welcome break in your busy week.
And to finish my design I am adding two tiny dew drop crystals for Valentine's Day sparkle.
See the Tutorials below for how, and why I add these crystals with a pin.
