For the love of those little gasps of unexpected wonder

A single positive surprise can heighten joy dramatically, and a steady rhythm of them keeps our creative spark from slipping into monotony. Moments of pretty surprises release dopamine and norepinephrine in our brains that sharpens our focus, lifts our mood, and pulls us fully into the present moment.

And so I have been sharing a positive surprise in the shape of a pretty floral design idea with you every single Wednesday (this week marks 788 weeks straight, not a single week missed!) in the hope that it adds little gasps of unexpected wonder to your week because regular encounters with novelty help us come up with ideas faster when our design turns out not exactly how we expected, it nudges our imagination to recognize creative possibilities we would’ve missed, and helps us identify new inspirations to keep filed for when we need it later.

In case you were wondering… this is how I decide whether the design fits this criteria to share with you:

  • The design must be inline with my personal values and personal design philosophy. This is what I stand for as a designer.

  • Be oh so original, so you can have that moment of unexpected novelty. These are all my own original design ideas. Not every week will be your favourite… but it will always be original and the absolute best I can share with you each week.

  • No special tools or equipment or even vases required to try a design technique you see here. You probably already own exactly what you need to reinterpret these designs in your own effortless style.

  • Must fit all budgets. No enormous amounts of expensive flowers required to “have a go”. Removing the frustration of running out of flowers when you want to have a “do-over” to master the technique or design along every single week.

  • I only use easy to find (or find substitutes growing this season, where you live) material. So that you can recognise the creative potential in what you already have available where you design.

  • Teach you something that absolutely works. I have studied floristry, have years of experience and even though these designs are fun and original and unusual I never stray far from our floral art competition “rules” and our floral industry “best practices” and always design with deep respect for nature.

  • It is presented to you in a trigger free environment. Positive novelty floral experiences for us to share and strengthen our social bond.

... so... enjoy! and Happy Valentine’s Day, flower buddies.
