Paphiopedilum

The name is from the Greek "Paphos" an island with a temple to the goddess Venus and "pedilum" meaning slipper. There are many different slipper orchids, some grow on the forest floor (terrestrial) and some high up on trees (epihytes) and some in limestone caves (lithophytes).
