On my online workbook this week: Over Easy

Dear

This week's inspiration is puddling about with some cooling water.

Come summer time designing I use water as an accessory. Of course flowers need a generous drink of water to remain hydrated but also speaking as a Definitely Not A Summer Person, so do I!

Just as you choose your vases and other accessories to suit the personality of your design so should your mechanics be. Rustic solutions for rustic designs (such as bark wire and raw sisal rope. Burlap rather than satin ribbon) and minimal solutions for minimal designs (such as smooth glass and clear water. A perfect knot rather than a bow)

Something interesting to note: as a general rule the less treated something is, the warmer it is perceived to be. A log with rough bark is perceived as being “warm” and a smooth sanded piece of wood is perceived as being “cool”.

Rusted metal, warm- smooth metal cool.

A closed tulip, cool- a reflexed tulip, warm.

What a fun and subtle way to tone down… or heat up a design!

Enjoy!

Every good wish,

Christine

ps: trick question: what about Ripped grass …? Warm or cool? I would love to hear what you think!
