On my online workbook this week: It’s one and a half to two times... but to the side
Dear
This week's inspiration is rules. It is impossible not to notice that most interior stylist do not observe the “rules” we as floral designers follow so faithfully. For instance you rarely find a stylist observing the “one and a half times the height of the vase” design rule. Now I am curious, if “everyone” is ignoring a rule… and this not following the rule becomes a rule, do you (who were taught this rule) ignore it as well now that no one is doing it?
Still on the topic of following rules my newsletter tip for you this week: I believe, as floral designers, that knowing the rules of our particular industry gives our work credibility. And as creative designers knowing how to push the boundaries of the rules is part of mastering our craft (For more on rules see the chapter on Testing the Rules in my book)
As a rule of thumb: If you decide not to follow a particular design rule… be deliberate about it. I will even exaggerate the fact that I am not following a particular rule in my design just to make sure it is obvious to the onlooker.
For instance you can flip the rule on its side, like I did in my design.
Enjoy this week’s design and tutorial… and as always I would love to see the wire leaves you make!
Every good wish,
Christine
ps: This copper wire leaf I made is similar to a bigger leaf featured in my book. You can find the silver version in the chapter "Tools, Equipment and Design space" on page 14 ... and if you want a sneak peek you can page through that section for free on Amazon.
