On my online workbook this week: ‘Twas, and still is how pausing to add a grin to your Swag Details that really Crafts a special Christmas

Dear

This week’s inspiration is how nature’s imperfections are absolutely perfect when we take time to notice.

My design note for you this week is all about changing your perspective. Hanging your swag before designing will give it a whole different look than designing it on your table would.

Of course all floral designs looks slightly different depending on how it hangs or is carried or is displayed. This is why I always suggest you have a mirror in your design room. Looking at your design reflected in a mirror (or if you are designing on location, taking a picture and then looking at the design picture) can give you a fresh perspective on your design and help you to instantly identify any problem areas.

Also I prefer, where possible, to design as much as possible of the arrangement how it will be displayed. Prop it up or hang it up if that is the way it will be viewed. This way you can make sure the design details make sense. For instance, once the swag is in position will the water source for your orchids still be upright? The phalaenopsis orchids are slow drinkers and you can get away with the tiniest little water tube (like my drinking straw tube, see the tutorial below the post) but they do need to be hydrated to remain fresh for as long as possible. Adding the flowers once the design is in position will ensure that the water will not spill out of the tube if it is now at an odd angle.

But my main reason for first hanging the swag is because I want to see exactly how I can position the orchids before cutting any flowers from the stem. Yes, you can simply cut the flowers from the stem in one way but what makes Phalaenopsis orchids especially ideal for a design like this is how the flowers grow on the tall and elegant spikes. The stem and flower position depends on where you cut it giving you multiple design (see the pictures above) options. This way you can envision how you want the stem to be positioned, cut the flower and slip it between the twigs exactly how you want it.

Stringing the swag up so that you can customize each placement is such a luxury and really the best way to make sure your flowers don't get bruised when placed, the most delicate twigs wont snap off along the way and the snow will be exactly where you want it. Win, win and win.

Enjoy!

Every good wish,

Christine
