On my online workbook this week: Note to Self
Dear
This week's inspiration is a new season… new ideas.
When we are used to seeing things a certain way (yes, even pretty flowers or decorative grasses) we stop noticing them. The idea of design is to take the things that we always see and present them in a new way so that we notice them again. That is what you do best… because no one sees things quite the way you do. Practice showing us that.
My tip for you this week is how to pick up the open weave grid so that it doesn’t fall apart. You can absolutely secure the weave in place… but only if you know exactly where you want the weave to be on your container. This is hard to predict because you might want to adjust it as you design. But if you are certain your weave is exactly right… go ahead and tie the cross sections with grass or glue it right on the places where the grasses cross.
You can also glue or tie only enough cross sections to make sure the weave stays in place as you lift it but also give you the flexibility to adjust some sections that are not glued when you start to design.
My preferred way is to weave the grasses tighter on my design table so that the end pieces dangle. This way the weave keeps better when moved and I have full control over adjusting the weave once it is in place on my container. Simply space out the weave to fit. This is also my preferred method if I think I might change my mind about the container that I want to use because you can simply switch it out without any fuss.
Enjoy!
Every good wish,
Christine
ps: in the Tutorial I mention a way to keep the grass hydrated by pushing the stems into the water below. Look below for a closer picture if you are curious how that would look.
