On my online workbook this week: Like an open book

Dear

This week's inspiration is all connected.

The leaves create a shallow puddle in the larger container for the orchids to rest in. And in turn the orchid stems wedge into the container to keep the leaves in place.

My tip for you today is how to help keep the leaves in place. The leaves will float and curve in the water. To keep them neatly separated to line the container they need a bit of help. I use a small stem to gently wedge the leaves in place. You can do this with your flower stem or you can cut another stem- see the picture above. Wedge it from side to side so that the leaves remain separated and lining the glass. The flower heads can then gently rest on this stem to keep them slightly suspended above the water.

The trick here to help the design look effortless. It is important to conceal this stem that keeps it all in place. For me that means: let it blend in. Use a stem similar to either the leaves or the flowers or the other plant material you choose so that it is less obvious. But do make sure it is not a hard stem that will bruise or damage the leaves so that it is visible from the outside. A firm but slightly spongy stem works best. Or you can add a bit of padding (for instance a folder leaf or florist tape on the stem ends) to protect the leaves.

Enjoy!

Every good wish,

Christine
