On my online workbook this week: And so

Dear

This week’s inspiration is making the most of the way winter sparkles… to get over the lack of Christmas sparkle.

My design notes for this week is to finish my designs, I like to add a bit of a something that makes my design… quite impossible!

For my design I wanted to create a twig in a blizzard feel. It is completely windblown and clearly leaning "this way" in the winter storm. Every floral design needs "a little something" that makes it a design. A little something that is not quite “put some flowers in a vase” arranging.

In this design it was gluing in snow covered twigs to hover "this way" over the anthurium flowers so that it looks like it blew/grew that way. In reality they are simply too delicate to “survive” the tension you need to put on the anthurium stems to kick into place and would have snapped off… and that is the design trick! Be mindful of where the twigs snap off when you design. Glue twigs back in those places… only now exaggerate it slightly to make sure it looks designed and on purpose and impossible.

Yes, onlookers absolutely notice the impossible. Our eyes pick it up. Nothing is as irresistible to a floral design enthusiast as an impossible design. If you want to create designs that stop the viewer so that they lean in to take a closer look, appreciate the pretty a little longer, add something that would have made this design impossible to do and give the clever viewer the opportunity to be curious and “figure it out”.

Enjoy!

Every good wish,

Christine
