On my online workbook this week: Rest a bit here

Dear

This week's inspiration is... well... I must say this is probably one of my all time favourite designs. So the inspiration is keeping it simple.

My tip for you this week is how to test your leaf to see where/if it has just the right amount of “kick”. The placement of the leaf in the vase for this design depends on the midrib more than anything else. This leaf is supporting the heavy flower stem and needs to kick against the sides of the vase to stay firmly in place… without looking like it is uncomfortably wedged into place.

Roll the leaf to test where it is firm but still bends at a soft curve so that, that portion go into the vase to kick against the sides. (Hint: Leaves are less bendable closer to the stem end than to the tip) Be gentle though… it should look as if the leaf is merely floating in a curve skimming the surface. If the midrib (or primary vein or first order vein) is too hard where you bend it the leaf will curve sharply with the stem pointing at an odd angle. If it is too soft it will sink into the water when you add the flower.

When you find just the right spot to bend the leaf gently, but securely, it lines the container from side to side adding to the sense of calmness of the design and giving your short flower stem a much needed lift out of the water.

Enjoy!

Every good wish,

Christine
